Pu-erh tea found to demonstrate hepatoprotective and antioxidant properties

A study published in the journal Food Science and Human Wellness revealed that Pu-erh tea contains hepatoprotective and antioxidant properties. In this study, the effects of Pu-erh tea water extracts on rats fed with a high-fat diet were examined.

  • Researchers from Tianjin University of Commerce and Yunnan Tasly Deepure Biological Tea Group Company Limited in China studied fed rats with a high-fat diet, then treated the animals with Pu-erh tea extract in three different doses: 0.45 g/kg body weight, 0.90 g/kg, and 1.35 g/kg.
  • The treatment period lasted for 12 weeks.
  • The researchers measured the body weight of the animals once a day and measured various parameters for liver health.
  • The results showed that the treatment with Pu-erh tea extract prevented the increases of body weight and fat index, reduced oxidative stress, and inhibited lipid peroxidation — all of which contributed to the protection of the liver in rats.
  • In addition, Pu-erh tea extracts displayed a strong protective effect against liver damage by oxidative stress.
  • Pu-erh tea extracts can also protect against liver disease by reducing glucose level and increasing the production of hepatic glycogen and the activity of pyruvate kinase.

In conclusion, Pu-erh tea can be used as a drink to prevent and treat fatty liver disease and other diseases linked to oxidative stress.
