Pau d’arco is a part of the Tabebuia genus that grows in tropical regions. Pau d’arco is considered as one of the most powerful natural medicines because it can be used to treat a wide range of health problems, from minor to severe. It has been used in traditional medicine by indigenous tribes throughout South America for thousands of years.
Pau d’arco is known to protect against fungi, viruses, parasites, and bacteria, which makes it an excellent natural medicine for preventing infections. It also has the ability to reduce inflammation and relieve pain while enhancing the immune system, thinning blood, and drying secretions. Pau d’arco is also known to treat ulcers, psoriasis, allergies, urinary tract infections, candida infections, prostatitis, dysentery, and stomatitis.
Pau d’arco is also best known for its ability to fight cancer. It appears to induce apoptosis or programmed death in cancer cells. In addition, it gets rid of harmful free radicals in the body that often cause cancer. Some studies have shown that it can also reduce the size of tumors in people who already have cancer. A study conducted in 1980 found that an extract of pau d’arco reduced the size of tumors and relieved associated pain in people with kidney cancer, liver cancer, breast cancer, cervix cancer, and prostate cancer. This natural medicine can also cleanse the liver. Some people use pau d’arco against liver disease because of its liver-protecting properties. Pau d’arco has also been used to prevent Hodgkin’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.

Pau d’arco may also help in weight management. In animal studies, pau d’arco has been shown to potentially prevent weight gain in postmenopausal women with low estrogen levels. It can also prevent fat accumulation and help lose weight.
Some studies reveal pau d’arco as a powerful antioxidant, similar to vitamin E and other well-known antioxidants. Moreover, it has been found to potentially slow down aging and prolong life. In animal studies, it prevented age-related muscle and brain decline, increased energy use and the activity of energy metabolism genes, and protected the mitochondria. It also increased the levels of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+), an essential coenzyme that declines as people age. NAD+ is also known to be involved in the cancer-fighting mechanism of the Tabebuia tree compound called beta-lapochene.
Pau d’arco extract has been used as a natural remedy for other health conditions, including:
Before using pau d’arco, note that high doses may trigger dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. It may also be dangerous for people taking blood thinners as it has an “anti-vitamin K” activity. Be sure to only consume 2 to 3 milliliters (mL) of pau d’arco tincture, which is made from the bark of the tree, two to three times each day, although ideal dosage may also vary. Pau d’arco is also available as a tea and in the form of capsules, tablets, extracts, and powders.
