A multi-center randomized controlled trial has shown the efficacy of a Chinese herbal medicine as a natural galactagogue. Zengru Gao, a herbal complex derived from eight different plant genera, has long been prescribed by natural healers as a way for lactating mothers to increase their breast milk production. However, this has not been formally validated until now. The results of this compelling study have been published in BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine.
Some mothers from the treatment group did experience some adverse effects; although the researchers say that these were mild and resolved themselves after a few days. It was concluded that Zengru Gao may be considered as a potential candidate for increasing breast milk production postpartum.
